چکیده

In this work, using a spatial econometric perspective, the speed of convergence for a sample of 163 regions of the European Union over the period 1981-1996 is estimated. For this purpose, we use a specification strategy which allows an explicit modeling of both spatial heterogeneity and spatial autocorrelation found in the analyzed sample. The estimated final model combines groupwise-heterocedasticity, the identification of two regimes (Cohesion and non-Cohesion countries) and spatial dependence. Our results show how an appropriate treatment, simultaneously, of the problems derived from spatial structural instability and substantive spatial dependence can shed new insights into the European convergence process. One of the main findings of the paper is that the analysis opens a path to discern the ex-post general effects of European Union regional policies as a whole on the regional convergence process in terms of the Cohesion/Non Cohesion country dichotomy. Our estimations indicate that over the analyzed period there was a faster convergence in relative income levels of the regions belonging to Cohesion countries (5.3 per cent) than in the rest of the regions of the European Union (3.3 per cent). Therefore, our results contrast with other evidence that points to the fact that the convergence process in Europe stopped at the beginning of the 1980s. JEL classification: C21, C51, O52, R11, R15

Interregional Disparity and Convergence Tendency: An Empirical Study of TFP Growth in China

This paper presents an empirical analysis to improve our understanding of the catch-up and convergence tendencies of total factor productivity (TFP) growth across the Chinese provinces over 2003–2012. After controlling for the province heterogeneity, our regression results show that the Chinese provinces exhibit significant conditional convergence in TFP growth over the sample period. This indi...

Stochastic analysis of solute transport in heterogeneous, dual-permeability media

[1] A Eulerian perturbation method is applied to study the influence of medium heterogeneity on nonreactive chemical transport in a saturated, fractured porous medium under steady state flow conditions. A dual-permeability model is used to describe the flow and solute transport in the fractured medium [Gerke and van Genuchten, 1993a, 1993b]. The model involves two overlaying continua at the mac...

The Regional Economics Applications Laboratory (REAL) is a cooperative venture between the University of Illinois and the Fede

This paper examines the nature of interregional competition and complementarity in Indonesia. The analysis is important for the island country given the heterogeneity of the regional economies and will provide insights into the structure of economic interactions that should prove useful for policy-makers considering alternative decentralization schemes. Covering the 1975-1999 period, the analys...

Modelling input-output flows of severe acute respiratory syndrome in mainland China

BACKGROUND Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) originated in China in 2002, and it spread to 26 provinces in mainland China and 32 countries across five continents in a matter of months. This outbreak resulted in 774 deaths. However, the spatial features and potential determinants of SARS input-output flows remain unclear. METHODS We used an adjusted spatial interaction model to examine ...

Scaling in the global spreading patterns of pandemic Influenza A (H1N1) and the role of control: empirical statistics and modeling

Background: The pandemic of influenza A (H1N1) is a serious on-going global public crisis. Understanding its spreading dynamics is of fundamental importance for both public health and scientific researches. Recent studies have focused mainly on evaluation and prediction of on-going spreading, which strongly depends on detailed information about the structure of social contacts, human traveling ...
